Treatment process
What is scar revision around the vagina and perineum?
Various mechanisms can cause injuries to the perineum and vagina, most of which are caused by childbirth. Every healing process is accompanied by scar formation, and sometimes scar tissue can lead to discomfort. Depending on the location of the scar and the symptoms, a correction of the scar will be performed.
Why scar revision around the vagina and perineum?
A scar in the perineum, vulva, or vagina can occur due to childbirth, an episiotomy, surgery, or an injury. Scars can cause symptoms such as pain, itching, tension, discomfort during intercourse, sports, daily activities, or feelings of insecurity. You can undergo a corrective surgery in which you will work with the doctor to find the best solution for you. The goal of the procedure is to reduce discomfort, improve the function of the vagina, and sometimes also restore the cosmetic appearance.
Prior to scar revision
Before the treatment, a consultation will be scheduled with one of our expert gynecologists. A physical examination will take place, followed by a discussion where we will talk about your wishes, expectations, and the details of the treatment. During this conversation, you can ask any questions, and we will ensure that you are well-informed about the entire process, from treatment to recovery.
How does the treatment for scar revision proceed?
On the day of the treatment, you will check in at the reception upon arrival. If the doctor has prescribed medication, it is important to bring it to the clinic and take it upon arrival. At the clinic, you will be given a numbing cream with instructions to apply it to the area to be treated. This cream helps make the numbing injections less painful. The cream requires some time to take effect, so it is important to arrive well in advance of the treatment. Once the cream has taken effect, you will be guided to the treatment room. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and takes about half an hour. The doctor will close the wound with dissolvable stitches.
Recovery
After the treatment, there may be some swelling, bruising, and pain. We will provide detailed instructions regarding care and lifestyle guidelines following the procedure. The recovery from a perineal correction may take several weeks, so it is important not to expect immediate results. The final result will only be visible after a few months.
