Laser for pigmentation

Pigment spots can often be considered cosmetically bothersome for both women and men, especially on the face.

The removal of benign pigment spots can be safely performed using IPL (Intense Pulsed Light). Before any treatment takes place, the type of pigment spot is first determined. Depending on the type of pigment, the best treatment option for you will be recommended.

Treatment process

Consultation

The skin therapist will discuss the treatment options, the expected effects, benefits, and risks. The treatment for pigment spots is tailored to your individual preferences as well as what is medically appropriate.

During the consultation, the overall skin condition will be assessed. Based on this assessment, personalized advice will be provided, which will include product recommendations and the treatments available at the clinic. It is crucial to use the right skincare alongside treatments, as this will help the results of the treatment last longer.

Function

Treatment with IPL or laser is only applied to benign pigment spots. The pigment is selectively damaged and subsequently removed by the body itself. On average, 1 to 4 treatments are required, with intervals of 4 weeks. Because heat is generated in the skin during IPL or laser treatments, this method is not suitable for all pigmentation disorders. In some cases, the heat may worsen the pigmentation problem.

Indication

The treatment can be performed on all skin types.

Of course, the type of pigmentation disorder will be assessed first.

Results

The results of a treatment for pigmentation spots are not permanent. In many cases, the results last a long time, but this depends on your skin condition, sun exposure, and the skincare products you use.

To maintain optimal results, the skin therapists will recommend skincare products during a consultation that help control pigment release in the skin.

Before treatment

Do not go unprotected in the sun for 4 weeks before a treatment and at least 4 weeks after the treatment. When the skin is sun-tanned, the IPL or laser may have difficulty distinguishing between the pigmentation spots and the tanned skin. There is a risk that the healthy surrounding pigment, in addition to the pigmentation spot, may also react to the laser treatment, which can lead to pigmentation shifts.

Aftercare

During and immediately after the treatment, a dark discoloration of the pigmentation spot will be visible. The healthy skin around the spot may temporarily appear red, but this will disappear within a few hours and is completely normal.

The most common side effects include redness, localized swelling, and sensitivity in the treated area. These side effects are usually mild and temporary in nature. In some cases, a superficial scab may form. The scabbing will heal on its own if the skin is protected with a good sunscreen and left undisturbed. If the scab comes off accidentally, for example by scratching, a scar may develop.
